AWHPC Lawsuit Spares Hundreds of Wild Horses in Nevada’s Pancake Complex

February 19, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

A lawsuit filed by the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, The Cloud Foundation, and the Western Watersheds Project has not yet had a hearing in federal court, but has already had an impact for Nevada mustangs. The lawsuit targets the Bureau of Land Management’s plans for the Pancake Complex in eastern Nevada. Although we could not legally challenge the entire roundup, our suit takes aim at the most objectionable and controversial parts of the agency’s management plan for this public land area.

As a result of our lawsuit:

  • The BLM postponed plans to “zero out” (eliminate wild horses from) the Jakes Wash Herd Area;
  • The BLM postponed plans to replace up to 200 wild free roaming horses with castrated stallions on the range;
  • The U.S. Forest Service cancelled plans to roundup 198 wild horses in the Monte Cristo Wild Horse Territory.
