The BLM National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board is composed of representatives from multiple interest groups and the public. The nine members of the Board, who represent interests ranging from humane advocacy to livestock management, usually meet twice a year to listen to presentations on issues that affect wild horse and burro management decisions, discuss the topics and issues, and generate a list of recommendations on how to improve the management of wild horses and burros which they submit to the BLM for consideration.

In August of 2015, I was a lucky passenger in TJ Holmes’s Jeep, joining her, Suzanne Roy, and Jen Maramonte in an especially rewarding visit to Spring Creek Basin Herd Management Area in southwestern Colorado. Actually I am often lucky, as TJ is my friend and neighbor and I go into the basin with her regularly.

We are desperately attempting to find placement for two bands of horses recently removed by the Nevada Department of Agriculture from the Virginia Range, who will go to slaughter auction in less than two weeks if we are unsuccessful. Additionally, we have eight horses at Horses Plus Humane Society in northern California who were removed from the Virginia Range by the NDA over a year ago. We have been paying Horses Plus to keep these horses and not euthanize them, however they are moving and cannot take these horses with them.

Starting on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, the BLM is launching a massive capture of 1,400 horses in Oregon. Born wild, these animals will lose their freedom and their families in this roundup. Some will lose their lives. Most will be sent to holding facilities where nearly 50,000 wild horses and burros are stockpiled.
